iThrough will donate a figure calculated by the number of Twitter retweets a message gets.
Carol Chang, the Public Relations manager for iThrough said the ecommerce site wanted to give back to the online world which had helped it grow.
The Apple accessories site has only been online for a few months but the parent company has been growing since 2006 due to the support of a loyal customer base.
“Charity work isn’t something you’d usually associate with consumer electronics sellers or Chinese merchants but this is something we’d like to change,” according to Mrs Chang.
Grassroots.org is the intented recipient because of its unique role as a helper of other NGOs.
“Instead of fighting for a specific cause Grassroots provides charitable groups with the services they need to carry on their work in the online world free of charge,” said Mrs Chang. “This is vital in today’s online world where making any type of impact is impossible without a digital presence.”
The not for profit group ‘adopts’ other charities then provides them with administration, translation and site building and management services for free.
According to Carol Chang the Apple accessory seller hoped that that tweeters would retweet the message:
RT #helpithroughhelp and @ithrough will #donate 50c to grassroots.org
“We hope the tweet will be retweeted at least 500 times,” said Mrs Chang. “Grassroots is able to do a lot with very little money so we want to make sure it gets the most possible.”
