March 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Millions have seen the recent 8.9 earthquake and dreadful tsunami that struck Japan.  The footage seen mainly from Japanese TV networks has everyone wondering long it will take to rebuild Japan and how big of an impact the disasters and their consequences will have on Japan and the global economy. Once again, journalists are challenged to provide the answers to these questions and more while covering the disastrous effects of Mother Nature.

In Covering Disaster, Ralph Izard and Jay L. Perkins examined some of the human and professional coping mechanisms and lessons that may be learned from how the media covers disaster.  Journalists respond largely by redefining traditional ideals of fairness, balance, and objectivity and by adopting an emotionally driven and somewhat more subjective reporting style. “The tools of the trade are changing rapidly, and as Izard and Perkins demonstrate, so are the acceptable boundaries of the journalistic point of view,” says Barb Raab, senior Newswriter, NBC News. “But the authors also remind us of the importance of eternal verities.  Covering Disaster provides all of us with as good a road map as we can ever have for reporting on horrors we can’t imagine until they happen.”
