March 16, 2011 - PRLog -- Caribbean American Fashion Exchange - CAFE 2011 is proud to accept Sophia Clarke as the first Barbadian designer to participate in the Caribbean Fashion Trade Mission (CFTM), the first event of the CAFE 2011 program. Ms Clarke along with other Caribbean designers will be traveling to Trinidad and Tobago, May 26-29, 2011 to meet with buyers, retailers, and press to display their designs and accessories. Along with Barbados, fashion designers from the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad & Tobago are scheduled to participate in the CAFE 2011 program. The CFTM will include fashion presentations and seminars for the regional design community.

“I have loved fashion for as long as I can remember.” says the Barbadian designer who now resides in TX. Born Sophia Harewood in 1977 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados, Sophia was encouraged by her great-grandmother; Emmaline Stephenson to play dress up, which sparked her love for fashion. Her great-grandmother also taught her to sew which opened up a new world for her. Sophia’s mother, Paulette Harewood introduced her to art, by drawing sketches in Sophia’s art books as well as taking her to see art exhibits.

“I love what I do. Further, I believe as women we are seeking not only beauty in our fashion but also functionality and longevity.” Sophia’s collection, Emmaline, named after her beloved great-grandmother, features dresses in natural fibers infused with a blend of Caribbean memories and Texan colors.
