“This new product helps people with special needs be successful at school, home or work,” said Cindy Tastard with Sensory Solutions. “It helps them focus while keeping their hands busy at the same time.”
The Focus Lappy was created by a school psychologist to help students suffering from attention deficit disorder and autism learn better in school, and it currently has a patent pending.
There are two main parts to the Sensory Solutions Focus Lappy – the “focus fidgets” and the “weighted lap pad.”
The “focus fidgets” are small items attached to the Focus Lappy that special needs students can use to keep their hands busy in an acceptable manner. The interchangeable items can be customized to the personal needs of the user, and can be squeezed, tugged, or pulled, and come in soft, furry, stretchable or even hard forms.
Meanwhile, the “weighted lap pad” is a highly durable, attractive, child friendly pad that has a washable cover. Research has shown that the deep pressure from the added weights has a calming effect on people with autism, and can be grounding to people with ADHD.
“Because the Focus Lappy is on the child’s lap, they don’t move around or get out of their seats as much,” Tastard said. “It allows them to be more productive in school and learn better.”
“The Focus Lappy is often attractive to parents of kids with ADHD who want to utilize alternatives to medication,”
The Focus Lappy is available online starting at $62.99. There are three sizes, the Small Focus Lappy for children weighing 30 to 50 pounds; the Medium Focus Lappy for children weighing 40 to 70 pounds and the Large Focus Lappy for bigger children and adults. Each one comes with two free focus-fidgets. Focus Lappys are not recommended for children under three years of age, and are always to be used under adult supervison.
Sensory Solutions is also accepting purchase orders from school districts for the Focus Lappy. These orders should be faxed to 916-313-3496.
