March 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Nineteen people have shown signs of exposure to radiation, followed by two explosions hydrogen plant is n. 1 and 3 reactor. And 141 more afraid of being exposed to the awaiting evacuation, as the group of 60 people removed from a helicopter high school according to Japan's nuclear and industrial safety agency.

Although the health effects of radiation at low doses is controversial, National Research Council argues that no plan of what occurs naturally safe. Before the recent crisis at the plant of Daiichi, the radiation levels on the site reached 3,130 microsieverts hour - about half the average annual dose in the U.S.

Jacky Williams, director of the Center for Biophysical Assessment and Risk Management after irradiation of the University of Rochester Medical Center, called the evacuation radius of 12 miles of a security zone "very carefully to protect against the rain."

But even if a merger to avoid the possibility of radiation of low intensity that circulates in the air and pollute the soil after two explosions of vapor release is real, according to Dr. Janette Sherman, author and specialist in internal medicine and toxicology Alexandria, Virginia

"Assuming that the steam containing radioactive isotopes in nuclear reactors will not affect health, I think, is wishful thinking," said Sherman.

These radioisotopes such as iodine-131, strontium-90 and cesium-137, you put on the body. When they decay, they emit energy in the form of gamma rays, beta rays, which penetrate deep through the tissues, and alpha-rays, and DNA. Sherman compare them with harmful chemicals, which established different tissues of the body.

"We know that the radioactive iodine, which goes to the thyroid gland, can cause cancer and stunt the growth of children," said Sherman said, adding that exposure during pregnancy can damage the brain of the fetus. "We know that Strontium 90 is in bones and teeth, and is linked to immune disorders and leukemia. We must cesium soft tissues such as muscle and breast tissue."

Pregnant women, the risk of birth defects and miscarriages may also increase, Sherman said.
