March 14, 2011 - PRLog -- According to the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute, 50% of heart attack victims had normal cholesterol levels.  Because of this, many believe a simple cholesterol test is not enough information to establish cardiovascular risk in most people.
Dr. Bright McConnell, III of FitMed Partners explains, “We have a test that is called an Advanced Cardiovascular Lipid test, or the lipid plus test.  It provides essential information about a person’s cholesterol levels—not only if they have high cholesterol, but what risk level they may be as far as cardiovascular disease is concerned.   This advanced test for cardiovascular risk differs from the typical cholesterol test by identifying lipoprotein particle size which is an important contributing risk factor.”
Why does lipoprotein particle size matter?  States McConnell, “Research shows that lipoproteins that carry the cholesterol are responsible for plaque production and accelerating cardiovascular disease progression.  A high number of LDL particles, which the Lipid Plus test will show, increases the cardiovascular risk.  A normal blood draw and cholesterol check will not give you this kind of information.”
Dr. McConnell is the only practitioner locally that is offering this advanced cardiovascular test.  According to Dr. McConnell, there are some keys to prevention.  He states, “Statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) can’t be the only solution for a healthy heart.  There are other ways to stay in good cardiovascular health.”  For many patients, nutrient depletions can be a cause of high cholesterol that is relatively easy to fix.  He explains, “Nutrient deficiencies are often missed.   We identify this with micronutrient testing.”
Tests being offered at FitMed Partners are the Advanced Cardiovascular Lipid test that will determine a patient’s cholesterol levels and risks as well as Micronutrient testing.  To schedule an appointment, call Fitmed Partners at 843.284.5720.
