Medical administrative assistants perform many duties, including answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping.
According to MBC staff, “This can be an exciting and rewarding career for those who enjoy helping people. A rapidly increasing aging population creates a stronger demand for health services personnel making employment prospects look bright.”
The Halifax medical administration training program offered at MBC also teaches students Medical Office Manager (MOM), which is the most widely used computer program in Nova Scotia for MSI billing and patient record keeping. “Students are introduced to the special fields of medicine, hospitals, and other medical agencies in and around our area. The importance of professionalism and confidentiality between medical administrative assistants and co-workers, doctors, referral agencies, and patients is stressed.”
MBC’s Halifax medical administration training is a 42-week diploma program. To find out more, visit the Maritime Business College website at: www.maritimebusinesscollege.ca
