March 12, 2011 - PRLog -- There are millions of people caring for aging and elderly parents, and many are struggling.

They are overwhelmed and afraid of becoming "a burnt out shell of a person". Plenty of information and help exists, but it's difficult and time consuming to sort through it all. According to experienced trustee Kirk Harney, the trustees' job is overwhelming enough without having to sort through mountains of information to find what is really valuable and helpful.

In response to this need, during this 30 minute webinar Mr. Harney will offer help in 5 specific areas:

1) Organizing personal information. It's important for trustees to have all their parents' legal, financial, medical and personal documents organized and accessible.

2) Estate planning. While he does not offer specific legal advice, basic planning like wills and trusts, advance directives, avoiding probate, and powers of attorney are discussed and explained in layman terms.

3) Medical and health care. Topics include being a medical advocate, understanding medical office and insurance terminology, managing medications, and keeping parents safe in the hospital.

4) Housing options. Keeping parents in their own home is very important to most people, and ways to do that are discussed. However, the time comes for many when that is no longer viable, and different housing options are available. Assisted living, skilled nursing, dementia care, and other options will be explored with help to evalute the options included.

5) Personal relationships and siblings. Open communication, building a family team to share the care giving load, conflict resolution and money matters are important issues to deal with. Specific strategies for managing these will be presented.

Mr. Harney, who runs a popular website for trustees and caregivers, http://www.CareForElderlyParents.com says that the overwhelm can be managed and a sense of control is very helpful for anyone struggling with their job as trustee.

"I want to help family trustees and caregivers cope with their overwhelm and stress when they find themselves in charge of their elderly parents lives and affairs. I know how daunting this can be, having been trustee and caregiver for my parents for about 4 years as they passed away. We are in for a tidal wave of folks who will be struggling with this for years to come, and I truly want to use my experience to help."
