March 10, 2011 - PRLog -- A Wheatfield with Cypresses is a famous Van Gogh painting and a hotsell among Van Gogh reproductions.

Vincent Van Gogh created A Wheatfield with Cypresses in 1889 on a canvas, with 51.5 x 65 cm dimension. A Wheatfield with Cypresses was one among the many paintings created by Van Gogh during the last two years of his life. A Wheatfield with Cypresses was created by the artist when he was in the mental asylum at St. Remy in May 1889. The painting was one of the three versions of ‘A Wheatfield with Cypresses’.

It was also mentioned in one of Van Gogh’s letters to Theo. In the letter the painting was mentioned by the artist as `a cornfield very yellow’ and the cypress–a tree just then `always occupying my thoughts’ that was `a splash of black in a sunny landscape’. The turning brushstrokes in the painting portraying the sky, give a very disturbing clue of artist’s mental imbalance and violence beyond control at a first glance. However, if the picture is viewed more consistently for long it appears perfect in the mass of curves repeated several times in twists and turns and throughout the work. In this brilliant painting, the cypress is represented in a flame pattern. Moreover, the painting brilliantly represents a sustained effort of the artist even in the most critical condition of his life.

Other related works by Van Gogh included simply Cypresses and various other wheatfield landscape paintings from his short but prolific career. A Wheatfield with Cypresses and wheatfield with Crows remain two of his most important paintings, helping to move art in new directions with new theories and ideas that had not been seen before, such as with the balance of light and perspective which this artist sought to challenge.

Van Gogh whilst a Dutchman was in love with France and it’s colourful landscapes which included in many of Van Gogh paintings as he wanted to control his mental instability and progress his career and personal development. His brother Theo advised him to continue in these locations and the wheatfields and cypresses were to become a common and important element in these series of paintings.

Van Gogh felt these had great colour schemes which matched his own personal taste and also represented the calm scenery that he sought to paint. The artist was a great contrast between personal ups and downs, whilst his topics were motionless and relaxed.

In a word, the wheatfields and cypresses of France became an important focus for the Dutch painter in a similar way to Monet’s haystacks for several reasons, both aesthetic and as ways of achieving technical practice. Around 10 to 15 paintings from his career feature one or both of these topics, and both were artists who liked to produce many paintings based on the same topic.

A Wheatfield with Cypresses was sold in a private sale at Steven Mazoh, by son of Emil Georg Buhrle. Walter H. Annenberg paid a grand sum of $57 million for this brilliant artwork, making it as one of the most expensive paintings ever sold in an auction.
