My understanding is that organizational culture is made up of the interactions of employees, managers, and execs in the context of the explicit and implicit values and processes of the company. That means culture is defined by the highly complex frameworks of the people in an organization. When you consider how different people’s frameworks can be depending on their beliefs, upbringing, talents, education etc., it can become overwhelming to think about how to change it. We can’t know or manipulate the previously formed frameworks of all employees! However, we can put processes in place and create norms that guide behavior and in turn culture.
So what kind of culture do we want to cultivate? Preferably one in which people can feel motivated and be highly productive, right? Motivation and productivity seem directly influenced by how well people within an organization can collaborate successfully and how much they feel they are trusted and valued as an equal. Thus, among other things, it is very important to put processes in place that encourage “humble inquiry.” This involves enabling people within an organization to give and receive assistance in an effective manner across hierarchical boundaries. Edgar Schein, MIT’s expert on organizational culture, says that enabling a culture of mutual help is indeed pivotal to the future success of organizations.
Well, today we are in luck because many of the new SaaS solutions on the market can shift an organizational culture to one of mutual help with greater levels of equality and transparency. This is because many SaaS solutions enable easy and effective collaboration and the giving of assistance across the hierarchy. Our newly launched solution, the UpMo Career Mobilizer, in particular, can provide higher levels of transparency and equity within organizations because it enables employees to see open job and project opportunities that match their career aspirations and skill set as they become available. This can be very empowering to employees. Our solution can also shift a culture to being one of mutual help as it provides the ability for employees, managers and executives to provide feedback about a position/project, and mentor or vouch for someone for a certain position. Putting these kinds of processes in place in your organization could be the key to shifting to a healthier, more productive organizational culture.
