March 10, 2011 - PRLog -- With the littoral community due to congregate at the Ship Defence in the Littorals (http://www.littoralshipdefence.com) conference in March, Captain Phillip Heyl, Senior USCG Representative at US AFRICOM has agreed to reveal the results of the AMLEP and APS projects as the US Navy continues to search for asymmetric solutions to the littoral threats in West Africa. Regional cooperation has become a necessity and regional navies are now actively seeking the help of their Coast Guard and multinational naval counterparts. Captain Heyl will use the littoral threats in West Africa as part of a case study to showcase how vessels can be protected from the emerging asymmetric threat.

Surface and submerged countermeasures will also form part of the NATO Undersea Research Centre presentation on “Countering Asymmetric Threats in Port and Harbour,” a critical insight into ship vulnerability as the surge of piracy shows no sign of abating. Meanwhile, Captain B.W.J. Bekkering has decided to offer his own case study on littoral operations in the Gulf of Aden to the littoral audience, looking specifically at the mission parameters of HNLMS Johan de Witt in the Gulf of Aden and how systems, doctrine and requirements are having to be adapted to head of the challenge of piracy in a testing area.

Ship Defence in the Littorals 2011 (http://www.littoralshipdefence.com) will take place in Amsterdam on 28th–30th March 2011. The full agenda including full details of the briefings by Captain Bekkering and Captain Heyl can also be found at http://www.littoralshipdefence.com.
