March 9, 2011 - PRLog -- The use of tracking cookies on websites will need to become much clearer due to a new European directive which will come into force on 25th May 2011.

Tracking cookies monitor users as they move around websites on the internet, and then use this information to target advertising. For instance, if someone researches a product that they would like to buy, tracking cookies provide this information to advertisers, and then helps them to choose which products and services to display to the user. This behavioural tracking has caused the introduction of the EU directive, which mandates that visitors have to give explicit consent to websites storing and retrieving information in these cookies. There is an explicit exception to using the information in tracking cookies to track what is in an online shop’s basket.

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) who will be responsible for enforcing this change are not likely to rush to enforce this until the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has both written up the legislation and provided details on how to comply with them.

Should you wish to ensure that your website is ready for the new changes, please contact Covenant Solutions Limited for a free, no obligation website review.
