California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones says Blue Shield still needs to provide more information to respond to the state regulator’s requests. Thus, Blue Shield’s March 1 increase is being delayed until May 1. The delay gives consumers a chance to comparison shop for better rates while still covered rather than risk going without coverage while searching for lower-priced plans.
Presently, insurers must give 30-days notice before raising rates, but the governor is expected to sign a new bill that’s on its way to his desk. This bill would double the advance notice consumers receive prior to rate increases.
Senator Mark Leno’s bill would require health insurance companies to post rate increases on their websites along with reasons for the increase. Leno says, “It will finally bring some transparency to rate increases for those who are seeing their health care premiums going up at lightening speed.”
