One World Everybody Eats 41 S 300 E Salt Lake City, UT Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2011 Time: 10:30am What do a bridge club, an education foundation, an artist, and a group of elementary school students have in common? All have been contributors to a large-scale mosaic mural to be unveiled this Tuesday at One World Everybody Eats in Salt Lake City. The project began about three years ago when Rosanne Henderson, Fine Arts Department Chair of the Salt Lake City School District stopped by One World Everybody Eats near the District offices for a meal. She noticed the unconventional atmosphere and format of the restaurant: a pay-what-you- Flash-forward a couple years later, artist Roger Whiting was meeting with Henderson about helping with a charity fundraiser and mentioned that he enjoys creating murals with youth. Henderson brought up the One World Cafe, so the two co-wrote a grant proposal to Art Access which was subsequently funded. The mosaic mural was designed and created with the youth of Nibley Park Elementary School over the course of a ten-week residency by Whiting from October through December 2010. The youth were chosen from the among the students in 3-5 grade receiving special education services, as well as eighth graders who could act as artist-mentors for the students. Whiting donated his time to install the mural at One World. The mural expresses the various missions of One World including sustainable environmental practices, work training and providing for the poor. On Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 10:30am the students who participated in the project will travel across town to help with the unveiling of the mural (thanks to an extra donation from a local bridge club). The students will present their work to officials from the district, the school, One World and Art Access. This project was funded in part by a grant from Art Access/VSA Arts of Utah in connection with the Utah State Office of Education Special Education Services unit.
