March 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Consumers can now pick up a solar panel with their groceries as Sainsbury begins offering environmental technology alongside tins of beans.

In partnership with British Gas, Sainsbury have created Sainsbury's Energy, which will sell solar panels and insulation both in-store and online. The 2.1 kilowatt photovoltaic units will be delivered and installed by Sainsbury's Energy. Costs of the units start at £10,000 but this could lead to savings of as much as £22,000 over 25 years.

Justin King, Sainsbury's chief executive, stated, "Our ambition is for Sainsbury's Energy to become the number one destination for customers looking for new energy technologies, energy efficiency measures and great energy deals, so we can help them to reduce costs, while also reducing carbon emissions".

The UK government is expected to introduce a number of schemes during the summer, which will pay consumers for each unit of renewable energy produced, saving an average household £600 per year. Yet recent research suggests that such schemes may be hampered by consumers' lack of knowledge about small-scale renewable energy and where to procure the equipment.

It is hoped that this initiative from Sainsbury's Energy could change all that.
