802.11n WLAN – Why 802.11n WiFi required?

1. 802.11n 1T1R
The simplest 802.11n devices contain one transmit chain, one receive chain, and one data stream, most commonly denoted as 1x1 or 1T1R to provide the optimal upgrade path from legacy 802.11 solutions for up to 150Mbps PHY rate capability.

2. 802.11n 2T2R
The standard spatially multiplexed MIMO devices contain two transmit chains, two receive chains, and two data streams, commonly denoted as 2x2 or 2T2R to provide up to 300Mbps PHY rate capability.

3. 802.11n 2T3R 2-stream
Performance can be improved by adding receive and/or transmit chains.
2x3, 2-stream devices will have 20% improvement in average throughput comparing with 2x2, 2-stream at 20MHz mode in the uplink direction. Average throughput rates can be up to 40% better in the 30-40 ft range and 20% better in the 60-100 ft range at 40MHz mode in the uplink direction.

4. 802.11n 3T3R 2-stream
3x3, 2-stream devices outperform the2x2, 2-stream by better than 40% in the 20-100 ft range at 20MHz mode and 50% better in the critical 50-80 ft range at 40MHz mode.

5. 802.11n 3T3R 3-stream
Performance can be further improved by adding data streams and incorporating any or all of the Maximum Likelihood(ML), Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) and Transmit Beamforming (TxBF) technologies to enable data rate up to 450Mbps link rate for 40MHz channel.
