Golf Scholarships offered at Thailand’s PTIS International School

Golf scholarships are a new educational conception being offered to high school players in the Asia-Pacific region.

March 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Regionally, the game of golf has grown in popularity with Asian professionals such as Yang Yong-Eun, Thongchai Jaidee, KJ Choi, Wen-Chong Liang and Arjun Atwal making their presence at the top of the leaderboard, amassing a new generation of young Asian spectators and players to the game. With this recent surge, PTIS International School, one of the most prestigious international schools in South-East Asia with a first-class sports reputation, has seen a rise in school candidates of all ages looking to combine their academic studies with their golf dreams.

Three-Generation Golf Academy (TGGA), one of four sports academies at PTIS, believes in developing complete players and understands that education need not be sacrificed while achieving athletic goals. Team Elite - Golf Scholarships are now being offered at PTIS International School and the Academy to talented young players striving to be at the top of their game. Whether pursuing competition play, collegiate golf, a professional path or simply wanting to be the very best player possible, TGGA and PTIS offer a unique opportunity for the serious golfer.

Scholarship recipients are chosen based on academic achievement, character, financial need and involvement in golf. Skill level in the sport is only one of the considerations. Scholarship winners are eligible for reductions in fees of 25-50% yearly, which may be renewed annually if the student maintains a satisfactory grade-point average in class and performs well in regional tournament play.

Players attending TGGA will not only develop into competitive players while earning a high school diploma, but will also receive assistance and support from TGGA and PTIS staff for opportunities to further their golf career and academics by earning a golf scholarship to attend a university in the USA.

A goal and trend of University golf scholarships in the USA recently has been to broaden the diversity in the field, with many awards now targeting women and minorities. Such awards often only require an interest in the field or intent to pursue golf in the future, with less emphasis placed on being the best golfer on your high school team. Other areas that are considered to reward college-bound golfers are financial need, co-curricular activities and academic records beyond talent.

Recently the caliber of college golfers has increased and so has the competition for scholarships. It is imperative that junior golfers who are searching for scholarships have the skills and experience that is expected of college athletes.

Junior golfers who are determined to go to college on a golf scholarship should start working toward this goal at an early age and by high school should be competing locally. Gradually progressing to national levels of competition should get a young golfer on the right track to gaining the recognition of coaches. All tournaments and competitions should be documented, including scores and all necessary statistics. This will be very useful information when creating a resume to submit to colleges.

For students living in the Asia-Pacific region, PTIS International School is one of only a few boarding schools in Asia offering the International Baccalaureate Program (IB) and high-level sports coaching, preparing students academically and athletically to attend universities abroad.
