Autism spectrum disorders are a group of developmental disabilities due to a problem with the brain.

Parents of children with autism usually realize that there is something wrong with their child by the time the child is 18 months old, and talk to the doctor about their suspicions by time the child is 2. Some children, however appear normal the first year or year and a half of their life and then seem to regress suddenly, this is called the regressive type of autism.

All children should have routine physical and developmental examinations by their pediatrician. If the parents' concerns and the doctor's exam results indicate a problem. The doctor may feel that further testing needs to be done.

A developmental specialist usually does these tests along with comments from the parents and/or daycare if appropriate. Early intervention and treatment is vital.

Autism is a challenging condition for the child and his family. The life of a child with autism today is far better and richer than a child with the same symptoms thirty years ago. These children were often placed in institutions. Today most children are able to live with their families or in the community.
