Carbon Neutral Energy Group: Europe’s largest energy firms back deeper carbon cuts.

Several of the leading energy companies in Europe have said they support more stringent cuts for greenhouse gas emissions.

March 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Carbon Neutral Energy Group has learned that a number of Europe’s biggest energy companies including Britain’s Scottish & Southern Energy, Denmark’s Dong Energy and Dutch energy giant Eneco have said they are in support of deeper carbon cuts, highlighting a growing rift between traditional heavy industries, opposed to tougher cuts in the European Union, and several clean technology and service industries pushing to go further.

The energy firms issued a statement ahead of the EU climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard’s launch of a strategy document outlining her vision for the future.

The EU, with a population of more than 500 million, has adopted some of the globe’s toughest climate commitments, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions to 20% below 1990 levels by 2020.

The climate commissioner’s strategy does not aim to propose a new unilateral target, but is rather expected to emphasize that energy saving measures may be able to ensure a 25% cut for the EU at minimal cost to industry, Carbon Neutral Energy Group was told.

The companies which also include Norway’s Statkraft, Italy’s Sorgenia and Greece’s Public Power say that the EU should go further and adopt a formal target of 25%.

"As leaders of utility companies, we know that the benefits of early action far outweigh the costs of inertia or delayed action," the heads of the energy companies said in a joint statement available to Carbon Neutral Energy Group.

The utilities highlighted the economic benefits of reducing the EU’s dependence on fossil fuels at a time when oil prices are rocketing, which many fear may derail the global economic recovery.
