PRLog (Press Release)
- Mar. 3, 2011 -
Every year, the total cost of addressing corrosion in the oil and gas industry is estimated to reach as high as USD1.372 billion, of which one of the root causes has to be coating failures. Research has indicated that about 80% of all coating failures can be directly attributed to inadequate surface preparation which affects the coating adhesion, and the later costs incurred to fix them often far outweigh the initial cost of painting. Additional liability may also be expected when the entire plant needs to stop operating (shut down) for the necessary repairs to be made. Faced with the heightening maintenance costs, identification of the fundamental causes behind coating failures followed by effective preventive strategies are hence essential to help minimise the corrosion level and risk, and at the same time allocate the budget eff ectively. Selection and implementation of proper surface preparation are also essential to ensure coating adhesion to the substrate as well as to prolong the service life of the coating system. The ability to conduct proper pre-coatings, coatings applications and consistent post-coating maintenance are the three key criteria to be considered in surface engineering processes.
Surface Engineering 2011 will focus on providing the preventive strategies and coating
methodologies to achieve optimal corrosion control, which will ultimately reduce the need for extravagant maintenance fees. Key addressing issues include: The importance of exercising proper surface analysis and surface preparation before coating processes take place, methodologies to avoid premature coating failures during the processes, protective coating types and emerging technologies with immediate field application, as well as the post maintenance procedures to be considered to achieve cost efficiency. Venturing into every aspect of the coating life cycle, this conference is designed to gather multiple streams of expert points, which include: Industrial practitioners, chemical researchers/
surface engineering specialists, international coating and corrosion standards and regulatory bodies as well as surface engineering researchers and professional service providers. Delegates will be able to listen to real-world case studies and exchange ideas with their peers from around the region during this twoday conference while discussing emerging coating technologies such as green coatings, nanotechnology and the future of coating applications.
