Follow on Google News | Delaware Ohio police chief right on targetDelaware City Police Chief, Russ Martin, recently addressed the city council over concerns of their personal safety arising out of recent events such as the Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson, Arizona.
Chief Martin reassured the council that public assemblies are some of the safest places to be in the United States and that they have to keep that in perspective. Martin went on to say that you have to weigh the risk with the amount of money you want to spend to make it safer. He said he did not believe that city leaders were at any more of a risk now than they were before the Tucson shooting. Martin provided council with a threat assessment solution that would address viable threats to council’s safety without burdening taxpayers with non-essential security costs. Martin stated “I will never come in here and capitalize on emotion to try and establish an agenda for the police department. I believe this is the best assessment I can give you.” I believe what Chief Martin was saying is that the world can be a dangerous place for anyone whether you work in a factory, drive a bus, deliver packages or lead a city. We can not continue to burden taxpayers with non-essential services when a need for those services does not exist. My hats off to Chief Martin for removing himself from the politics, taking a stance on fiscal responsibility and telling it how it is.
