March 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Criminals are not often thought of as being business minded individuals but just like any good businessman, they are always looking for ways to be more efficient and productive at their profession. When we think of burglars, we often envision a man dressed in all black with a ski mask that lurks around in the dark while people are sleeping. While many thieves do operate at night under the cover of darkness, many have opted for daytime hours as they have proven to be productive.

Criminals are opportunists. They want to get in and out of your house as quickly and as quietly as possible. Taking into consideration that the majority of people work during the day, it makes sense. Also considering the fact that we are living in such a fast paced society where many neighbors don’t interact or take time to get to know one another, an unusual vehicle parked in the driveway can be passed off as a service repair company without much of a second thought.

A common tactic used by daytime burglars is to knock on the door to see if anyone is home before forcing entry. If met by a resident, they will often have an excuse ready such as needing directions, have you seen my lost dog, etc. They will continue this method until they find an easy target.

How do you protect your home when no one is there? Make every effort to make it look occupied. When you leave, keep a television or stereo on just loud enough that it can be heard from outside. Keep blinds and curtains closed so that what’s inside can’t be seen from outside. Security systems can be bypassed if there is not a tamper alarm not to mention installation costs and monthly monitoring fees. I recommend wireless self monitoring systems that when activated, will call your cell phone to alert you of a potential problem. Many of these units also allow you to listen in to what is going on in your home so you can determine whether or not to call the police. These units are relatively inexpensive and save in monitoring fees and false alarm charges.

Dogs certainly don’t make a burglar’s job any easier. A dog will often be enough to dissuade a potential thief; however, this option isn’t for everyone. If owning a dog isn’t a possibility for you, the criminal doesn’t have to know that. Purchase a dog tie out and stake it close to the house. Buy a big dog bone and a water dish to sit out front. Another cool little device is the Electronic Watchdog. Sit this inside the front door and it will actually sense motion outside through the door and bark when someone comes.

Home security is about prevention and perception. Practice these tips to keep your home safe while you’re away.
