Almost all patients come to the dental office with some form of dental fear and anxiety.  I certaintly understand and empathize with my patients in Libertyville Illinois.  Personally visiting the dentist is not on the top of my favorite things to do.  However, there are some amazing tricks and tips to help relieve and even eliminate the fear and anxiety of going to the dentist.  New techniques in sedation dentistry are allowing people to have much more comfortable visits at the dentist office even for longer procedures like fixing a broken or painful tooth.  Many people are starting to learn and hear about “sedation dentists” through online and print marketing.  What does this really mean for our patients in Libertyville and Gurnee and even patients across Lake County and beyond?  Their are many forms of sedation from IV and general anesthesia performed by oral surgeons, to oral conscious sedation.  Oral conscious sedation is the type of sedation most used by a properly trained general or family dentist.  Oral conscious sedation is not sleep dentistry, but rather you will take some common forms of prescription medications that will help you into a deep state of relaxation.  Typically these medications will be taken the night before and under the supervision of the doctor taken again right before your dental appointment.  You will be able to answer questions, be responsive, and have a level of awareness during the dental procedure.   What you can expect is to feel like you are in that state of being just before you fall asleep, if you know the feeling, you tend to answer questions when spoke to, but rarely remember conversations and things you talked about.  This is similar to the feeling you will have after leaving the dental office for your visits.  You will not quite be aware of exactly what happened, but you will know it was a comfortable experience.  How cool would it be to have a dental visit you could so easily forget!
