Transmission Capital Partners Wins UK's First Offshore Wind Farm Power Licence

March 2, 2011 - PRLog -- The UK government said Wednesday that Transmission Capital Partners had won the first licence to operate a high voltage line with an offshore wind farm following a competitive tender process.

A newly created company, to be called TC Robin Rigg OFTO Ltd., will hold the Offshore Transmission Owner Licence to operate the high voltage link from the offshore wind farm to the mainland.

The company will control the new £65 million link which will transport renewable electricity from the 180 MegaWatt Robin Rigg wind farm to the UK's onshore power grid for a period of 20 years. As part of the arrangement, the transmission link to the mainland has been transferred from the wind farm owner, E.on, to the new company.

The UK government is seeking to reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels and to promote development of cleaner, so called "green", energy sources, particularly from renewable sources such as wind.

UK energy regulator Ofgem said the award marks the first injection of what is anticipated to be billions of pounds of new capital into the country's growing offshore wind industry.

Such developments are also seen as being needed to meet the UK's energy infrastructure needs in coming decades.

The government's offshore transmission regime has been developed in partnership with Ofgem, since its launch in 2009, to deliver high voltage links to offshore wind farms as cost effectively as possible. Licences are granted through a competitive tendering process managed by Ofgem.
