Angels & Demons – Confessions of the Speeding Motorist

A comprehensive survey* by the UKs No 1 Free Cashback Website (Topcashback.co.uk), into driving attitudes and habits, has received a stunning response, proving yet again, that drivers and car owners are keen to express their views.

March 2, 2011 - PRLog -- It comes as no surprise to find that more than half of all those completing the survey admitted to speeding, mostly (56%) on motorways but some (17%) confessing to exceeding the limit in towns “now and then”.  3% were honest (or boastful) enough to admit being speed demons and constantly breaking the law. However, just over 1 in 5 (22.6%) claimed they were complete angels and never broke the speed limit.

Among those who admitted to speeding, just under half (48.4%) had actually been caught, meaning the majority are getting away with it. Those who had never been caught claimed this was because they had the cunning of a fox or the luck or the devil. The days of being ‘pulled over’ would now appear to be a thing of the past with more than eight out of ten being caught by the ever present speed camera.

Even among those ‘angels’ who claimed never to speed, 12% admitted to being ‘nicked’ at some point since passing their test. Perhaps they have mended their ways as a result?

The survey results showed the chances of being caught speeding increased with annual mileage, only a third of those averaging less than 10,000 miles a year had been caught but over half the higher mileage drivers had met the same fate. The difference between male and female drivers was also highlighted with 46% of men being caught compared to only 31% of women.

Over 2,000 members completed the online survey which revealed some fascinating insights into the behaviour of UK road users. Respondents were split 60:40 between men and women, the majority were experienced drivers with almost ¾ having passed their test more than 10 years ago.

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Duncan Robb of Top Cashback said “We are delighted with the response to the survey; we regularly seek the views of our members on a range of issues but we’ve never had so many complete a survey, it shows just how much the issues around driving and road usage generate strong feelings.”
