Dance Rocker: John Flanagan Releases Debut Album, Pretty Lies

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 1, 2011 - Fresh, unexpected, diverse – those are just a few of the words being used to describe John Flanagan’s debut album Pretty Lies, released Tuesday, February 15. The project is New England born Flanagan’s freshman effort, but is by no means his introduction to the limelight.  One year ago, Flanagan hit it big winning Foxwoods Resort Casino’s “Wonder Of It All” contest, in which he recorded an updated version of the resort casino’s iconic jingle.  Now airing in markets all across the Northeast, his adaptation of the jingle has been woven into the cultural fabric of the region’s media and sporting arenas including television and radio commercials and inside both Boston’s TD Banknorth Garden and New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Having spent the past year performing in venues across the country from Nashville to New York, Texas to Indiana, and Georgia to Oregon, Flanagan settled into the studio this fall with producer Jake Hartsfield to create his new record. Pretty Lies was certainly a marathon project – the track “Elephas” was co-written by Flanagan during his sophomore year of college in Nashville for his then-band, “The Gilly.” After a short stint with the band, Flanagan went solo but kept “Elephas” in his back pocket.

Other standouts on the album include “Love You Anyway,” “Nothing Like Your Love,” and “Stoplight,” all having seen their share of fan-acclaim in pre-release and leaked copies of the album.  These up-tempo radio singles embody the spirit of a genre which Flanagan defines as “Dance Rock.” His biggest musical influences include The Killers, Mika, Michael Jackson, and Lady Gaga, but his motivation comes from artists who are less mainstream.

“My lyrical inspiration and vocal technique come mostly from folk and independent artists.  If my time in Nashville taught me one thing, it’s a love of underground music.  Brandi Carlile and Patty Griffin are two of my greatest muses,” says Flanagan.

Flanagan recently moved to New York City, and is currently playing a slew of show dates hoping to expose a new audience to his innovative sound and glam-rock persona.
