Staying fashion-forward while being eco-conscious this year.

DIY expert gives advice on staying fashionable while being environmentally friendly.

Feb. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Edmonton, AB- We all have one: a favourite threadbare sweater that we cling to desperately despite the fact that we can’t actually wear it out of the house and still look respectable.  And as we collectively embark on spring cleaning it’s time to dig out those items from our closets and give them a new lease on life. It’s DIY expert Linda Bodo to the rescue of your wardrobe!

As we start to emerge from our winter cocoons, many of us are considering updating our wardrobes for the spring.  But a complete purge of our closet contents can be costly and unnecessary.  Instead of hitting the mall for new clothes, upcycling and repurposing existing items allows you to stay current while being financially and environmentally prudent.  And the incorporation of upcycling into fashion is one of the hottest things this season. Designers all across the world are getting in on this eco-friendly trend, and DIY-ists can get in on the action as well.

“We all have old T-shirts from special events or travels that we bought that don’t really fit or flatter, or are just plain worn out.  The sentimental value attached to these items makes it hard to throw them out, so why get rid of them?” Linda Bodo provides as an example, “Instead, they can be altered to be made into a stylish new piece of clothing, or repurposed entirely to make something like a quilt or a tote bag. The same goes for those old sweaters we love.  The wool from old sweaters can be felted and then used to make any number of fashion items with ease: belts, brooches, hats, purses – the list goes on!”

The added beauty of upcycling in fashion is that it’s accessible to everyone. People who aren’t necessarily ‘crafty’ themselves should not shy away from embracing the repurposing trend.  Bodo says that non-crafters should learn to embrace the tailor!  In every city, you’ll find talented tailors and seamstresses who excel at transforming seemingly defunct or out-dated clothing into fabulous new creations.  And by having clothing altered rather than going out and buying an entirely new piece, you’ll save hundreds of dollars every year while still having an up-to-date and fashion forward wardrobe.
