Feb. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Garfield NJ Chiropractor, Dr. Peter Ferraro of Ferraro Spine and Rehabilitation, explains how to detect scoliosis, a sideways curve in the spine that can cause stiffness and pain, and recommends treatment options.

The cause of scoliosis is unknown, but it begins during childhood and is more common in females. Garfield chiropractor Dr. Peter Ferraro explains that this condition only affects a mere two percent of the population, but can be very painful. The sideways curve scoliosis is known for creates either an “s” or “c” shaped curve and can rotate at the thoracic level of the spine, resulting in a hump near the rib cage. If this curve is more than 60 degrees, it is considered serious.

Garfield chiropractic patients should know that this curve could also cause the waist and/or shoulders to be uneven. Unfortunately, this is not a condition where adjusting your posture can remedy the problem.

Although, as stated earlier, the cause of scoliosis is unknown, it can in some cases be caused by osteoporosis or other degenerative spine diseases. The softening of the spine can cause the vertebrate to bend and shape into a curved shape, the distinguishing sign of scoliosis.

Garfield chiropractic patients can receive a combination of chiropractic care and physical therapy to prevent, treat and alleviate symptoms.  Dr. Ferraro can perform a simple test to look for signs of scoliosis. The Adam’s Forward Bending Test is an exam that has been used in physical education classes and requires the patient to bend at the waist to observe spinal alignment. From there, unevenness can be determined and a range of motion test can be performed to measure the degree of mobility.

If scoliosis is detected, immediate chiropractic care and physical therapy with Dr Ferraro can dramatically better the condition. An orthopedic brace may also be recommended to prevent the condition from worsening, and it does not limit physical activity. For pain, moist heat is recommended. Extreme cases may require surgery, but only after other treatment is thoroughly explored. Regular chiropractic visits to observe the progression of scoliosis are integral to the condition, as there are many treatment options to be explored.
