The J’s Cultural Arts Theatre, and the Bamachol Dance Academy of the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center/Sanford L. Ziff Campus, 18900 NE 25th Avenue, North Miami Beach, FL, will each present very special productions this month with J-CAT’s presentation of My Favorite Shorts, and Bamachol’s presentation of Dancing With The World, an international folklore dance festival.
Dancing with the World, which takes place on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 6pm at the new Aventura Arts Center, in Aventura, Florida will assemble a multitude of folk dance troupes, each showcasing their own cultural background, and promote the union between various ‘small communities’
throughout South Florida. Performing troupes include ‘Brazarte’
, a renowned, award winning dance company, that highlights Modern and Brazilian Folklore, Grupo Folclorico Puro Chile, Ballet Folclorico Aires Panamenos, Baila Flamenco, Live-in-color, Kulanu Israeli Dance Troupe, and many more. “This is truly a one of a kind event, where we have the opportunity to have on stage, Folk Dance Troupes from all over South Florida, representing our cultural diversity, and performing together in unity,” says Esther Fuhrman, Co-Chairperson for the Bamachol Dance Program. “An event like this only exists in the West Coast until now,” explains Roger Weiger, Artistic Director of the Dancing With The World Festival. We are very happy to present such a unique program to our community and celebrate its colorful cultural heritage,” he adds.
My Favorite Shorts is a compilation of short plays that showcases more than 40 student actors including high school, middle school, and elementary school players. “From comedy to drama, to melodrama, to farce, it’s truly an engaging and electric performance,”
mentions Michael Andron, Artistic Director for The J’s Cultural Arts Theatre. “I wanted to bring something uniquely different to the JCC, and this performance brings a variety of entertainment in one production, it appeals to all types of audiences- those who like comedy, those who like drama, those who like musicals, and those who like everything in-between,”
he adds. “My Favorite Shorts” immerses student actors into the full gamut of acting techniques, to make this an incredible learning experience for all participants.
Some of the plays within this play feature such favorites as The Golden Goose- A ‘story-theatre’
telling of a classic fairy tale, The Fisherman and His Wife- The classic fairy tale about greed and its consequences, and learning to be thankful for what you have.
The Marriage Proposal- A super-farce by Chekhov, one of the funniest plays of all time about an old maid, her blustery father, and a hypochondriac suitor for her hand in marriage, The Monkey’s Paw- A melodrama/ghost story: Three wishes from a magically cursed monkey’s paw are granted, but never come to pass as the wisher hopes, and The 15-minute Hamlet- Stoppard’s farce about a group of six actors who have to put on Hamlet with only six actors, and 15 minutes, plus several other classic favorites.
