Feb. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Primarily because of the opportunities made available to the participants of the J.C. Coleman Afterschool Program, grade averages were good, showing a six point average increase in the core classes of many of the kids. The grade averages are as follows: 80% in language arts, 79% in mathematics, 80% in social studies, 81% in science, 79% in reading, and 80% in writing.

Opportunities include homework help, tutorials, and enrichment activities such as current events/science, media appreciation, arts and crafts, literacy, and sports and recreation. The participants also have motivational speakers every two weeks and nutrition classes from Second Harvest every two weeks. Additionally, the kids have volunteer opportunities at the Old Savannah Mission and at Williams Court. Finally, the young people participate in fund-raising activities such as spaghetti dinners, car washes, and raffles.

In addition to good grades, conduct scores are noteworthy. Those receiving excellent comments are at 35%. Those receiving satisfactory comments are at 49%. And 16% received “needs improvement” comments
.
The variety of opportunities at the J.C. Coleman Afterschool Program opens doors to the imagination and to the classroom. The kids can easily transfer information from afterschool to school, thus allowing them to use the varieties of experiences in many ways to benefit them. This afterschool is not a typical afterschool program because of the opportunities, and the documented results, such as core grade improvement, are evidence of this fact.
