H-II: Cancer Message in Music - LIVESTRONG - The American Way

Feb. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- The soundtrack "The American Way" was recorded by Country Music Association Artist H-II Stephen Michael Apatow, [1] six weeks out of surgery and and two weeks into chemotherapy/radiation for tonsillar cancer, thanks to the extraordinary care of the physicians and staff at the Yale Cancer Center.  20 years into humanitarian relief operations and policy development through Humanitarian Resource Institute, the diagnosis sent shock waves through the international community, but brought home the message that everything comes with a cost. [2]

Today, in the article "Poverty's Cancer" [3] by Margaret Chan,  Director-General of the World Health Organization and Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, we read:

Cancer is an enormous – and growing – global public-health problem. And, of the 7.6 million cancer deaths every year, 4.8 million occur in the developing world. A disease formerly considered more pervasive in affluent countries now places its heaviest burden on poor and disadvantaged populations.

The importance of this message is intensified by the challenges in rural medicine where upwards of 5 billion people don't have access to basic surgical services or advanced diagnostics, [4]  in the developing world that today exists in a state of emergency and food crisis. [5]

Step by step, the work continues to identify the unmet needs in the global humanitarian landscape in conjunction with strategic planning and development of education and policy initiatives through Arts Integration Into Education and the United Nations Arts Initiative. [6]

Country Music Association Artist H-II: Stephen Michael Apatow is founder of the Humanitarian Resource Institute and United Nations Arts Initiative. Since 1989, national project development and advocacy work included the formation of Humanitarian Resource Institute, to "Bridge Unmet Needs to Untapped Resources." As director of research and development for the Humanitarian University Consortium Graduate Studies Center for Medicine, veterinary Medicine and Law, he promotes leadership development through strategic planning, critical analysis, expert think tank development for background discussions, peer reviewed data compilation and communications that engage decision makers and target audiences on the grassroots level in 192 United Nations member countries. Today, this work continues through the United Nations Arts Initiative and global promotion of "Arts Integration Into Education." He is also a Member/Publisher: American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).   As an artist, 2010 marked the release of his first album entitled "Country Goes Global." In 2011, Stephen was named an ambassador for the Vet2011 global initiative that celebrates World Veterinary Year and the 250th year  anniversary for the veterinary profession.
