Feb. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- This winter 15 students from across the nation won free textbooks for the 2011 spring semester after entering a giveaway contest hosted by Penntext, a national used textbook retailer that specializes in selling discount textbooks and conducting end of semester textbook buybacks at over 100 college campuses.

Thousands of students entered by signing up for Penntext's email and mobile phone updates, “liking” the company's Facebook page, tweeting @penntext on Twitter, or by checking-in at the local Penntext buyback location through Foursquare.

Winners received all of their required textbooks, worth an average of $450, for their spring semester courses. One of the top winners is Elijah Dabney, junior Chemistry student at Clark University; he received just over $770 worth of textbooks.

Dabney said, “I just want to thank you guys so much. You're a wonderful company and I cant wait till you come back to Clark in the spring to buy books, so I can thank one of you personally.”

Although this was the first time Penntext held a textbook giveaway, they have been in the business of helping students with the cost of textbooks for almost two decades. In 1991, Penntext started in a West Chester University dorm room by Dan Lieberman, a freshman business student, who was fed up with unfair prices at the campus bookstore. Since then it has become a family affair that prides itself on providing fair competition to university bookstores.

“There were no options out there for students like me who just wanted to buy books at an affordable price and get something reasonable back for them at the end of the semester,” Lieberman said. “So I did something about it.”

Thankfully options are increasing for students to sell back their textbooks. Companies like Penntext are providing competition in the textbook market, which will benefit students in the long run.
