While fluoride began as a fantastic idea, it has lately come under fire for the disputed negatives it may be causing when automatically injected into a city water system. The original idea, to add something to the water to help preserve healthy teeth, was a rather clever one. What better way to get the public a dose of something that could be good for them than while using their everyday water?
The downside is that now, after decades of generations ingesting fluoride, the tests are coming up with some questionable results. One of the most poignant of arguments against it is that we should decide what supplements we would like to take, not have it automatically distributed to us whether we like it or not.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is confident that fluoride is a safe additive to our water supply and is instrumental in the benefit it provides our dental health. An article published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal disagrees and is concerned about potential health risks, especially in children. Whether the benefits outweigh the risks has yet to be determined. Some say the risk is too great, while others believe that a healthy dental outlook is worth some potential risk.
For this reason, many municipalities are considering the removal of their fluoride programs from their water supplies. As it is not a certainty one way or the other, many are choosing to err on the safe side. Since fluoride is actually a byproduct of toxic industries, there are possibilities that they could be smart to be cautious in their use of the substance. The State of New York spends more than seven million dollars annually on their fluoride supply, which is acquired from industry waste.

Adding a water filtration system to your water supply may be a great solution to the fluoride and other potentially harmful substances that could be in your water. Drinking clean, fresh water free from any additives either purposely or through leaching is one of the best things you can do for your health in general. It’s easy and doesn’t need to be expensive to filter your own water at home. There are filters for whole house systems and for individual faucets and sinks. Do the whole house or just the sink at which your family fills up their drinking glasses.
