Based on data publihsed by the country's mobile operators, BMI calculates that Denmark's mobile subscriber base shrank by 1.7% in 2010 to reach 6.7mn at the end of the year. The loss of customers during the year reflects moves by the sector's leading operators to deduct inactive prepaid customers from their networks. BMI believes that 2008 and 2009 saw an expansion in the number of inactive SIM cards as a result of a proliferation of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) within the sector. Our latest forecast for Denmark's mobile market assumes that the resale/MVNO sector will fuel growth over the next few years. However, it also assumes that the market will see further moves by the operators to deduct inactive customers. Over the next five years, we envisage annual average growth of just 0.9%. By the end of 2015, we predict there will be just over 7mn mobile subscribers in Denmark, giving the country a penetration rate of around 125%. In addition to a certain number of inactive prepaid, this figure accounts for subscribers using more than one SIM. The move by Denmark's regulator in May 2010 to issue the operators with spectrum suitable for the provision of Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, marked the start of Denmark's transition to 'fourth generation' (4G) mobile services. Towards the end of 2010, the country's leading mobile operators began to commercially introduce LTE services, while simultaneously outlining plans to extend the reach of these services over the course of 2011. Meanwhile, the market for traditional fixed-line services based on PSTN and ISDN technology has been shrinking. According to the regulator, Denmark's fixed-line market shrank by 7.6% in H110 to reach 1.905mn. We estimate that there were 1.726mn fixed lines in the country at the end of 2010, equivalent to a penetration rate of 30.8%. The decline of the fixed-line market has been driven by the growing use of substitute services such as VoIP and mobile broadband. Over the next five years, we predict that Denmark's fixed-line market will shrink at annual average growth of 13.9%. By the end of 2015, we expect penetration to have fallen to 17.5%. Just as a market for traditional fixed-line services has continued to shrink, so too has the market for broadband internet services continued to expand. We estimate that there were just over 3mn broadband subscribers at the end of 2010, equivalent to a penetration rate of 53.8%. BMI's long-term forecast for Denmark's broadband market assumes that xDSL and cable services will decline in relative importance, while mobile broadband subscriptions and connections based on fibre optics will continue to grow in prominence. FTTx growth is expected to be boosted by the deployment of IPTV services while the growth of mobile broadband services will benefit from the deployment of stronger network coverage and faster data transmission speeds. Over the next five years, we predict an average annual growth rate of 6.1%, for Denmark's broadband subscriber base. By the end of 2015, we envisage just over 4mn subscribers equivalent to a penetration rate of 72.3%. Denmark sits in fourth position in BMI's Business Environment Ratings for Western Europe. With the exception of the Industry Rewards category, Denmark scores above average in all of the categories evaluated by BMI. In the Country Risk category, Denmark has the highest score in the region, with this score reflecting Denmark's stable political scene, as well as a high degree of economic prosperity.
