Feb. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- We at ThriftyPetSupply would like to take some time to see what are the best methods for housetraining a puppy? This week will be putting up some different ideas and would love to hear your input. If you dog is an inside dog, and in America over 90% of them are, the housebreaking process is unavoidable.  ThriftyPetSupply understands that housebreaking is a time consuming training issue and we would like to hear from you, as to what has worked for you and your furry family member.

ThriftyPetSupply has found there are two main rules to training your pet listed below.

Housetraining Rule Number One: ThriftyPetSupply believes this is The Most Important Rule – If you don't catch your puppy doing it - then don't punish him for it!

Housetraining Rule Number Two: Praise your puppy when things go right. Don't let this be a situation where your only action is saying "No" when he is caught in the midst of using the wrong area. If he does it right – let him know!

ThriftyPetSupply thinks there are several ways to housebreak a puppy and today we are going to start with putting down paper or puppy pads. Most of the pads are scented with a chemical that attracts the puppy to use them rather than your carpet or floor. Whenever you see the puppy starting into his "pre-potty pattern," such as walking around and sniffing the floor, you gently pick him up without talking and carry him over to the papers/pad and then praise him when he goes to the bathroom (Rule 2).

When all goes well and he is using the papers consistently, the papers are either moved closer to the door and/or another set is placed outside. The transition is made from concentrating the toilet habits to one spot inside the home to one spot outside the home. Finally, the papers inside are eliminated. The only problem with this method is that for a period of time it encourages the puppy to eliminate inside the home. ThriftyPetSupply’s experience has been that potty training may take longer when this method is used.

ThriftyPetSupply currently carries a variety of training pads for your convenience. We believe if you chose to use training pads, then you will need the size and amount that will suit your pet’s needs so we have them in different sizes and different amounts.
