Media Training Question #75 – What Are The Power Of Words?

Words are the answer and cause of every problem, and words, ladies and gentleman, are our chance and our choice for everything we have ever wanted and will lead us to places that only we can limit. How amazing is that.

Feb. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- This past weekend was one of the most extraordinary in my life and I hope in a future post that I can soon share with you why, but for now I want to share with you how my little slogan, “Every Word Matters” came to life this weekend.

I met this amazing soul.  A woman so dedicated to her reality and our shared realities that she embodies the reason and way we should all live our lives.  While introducing herself I was hypnotized by her every word.  So carefully chosen, so deliberate, and so easy.  It wasn’t because she was so practiced at her intro and it wasn’t because she was careful or more attuned to a certain obligation to political correctness, but because she authentically lives a life filled with the beauty and a responsibility to understand the intricacies of how language can make us better, more empowered people.  She has such a unique commitment to bridging words to ideas and issues that through the act of communication she forces the receiver of her words to instantly become more aware of their importance.  I will suggest many of us have never been as lucky as I was this past weekend to experience this pure form of humanity.

Made even more remarkable, and another true gift, was that I for maybe the first time ever know what it feels like to be listened to with fierceness.  I mean that in the most beautiful way.  It felt like no drug you could imagine and it empowered and inspired me to be more present and passionate about my own sense of who I am.  There is magic in that moment that was surprising and uplifting.

I live in a world where every word matters.  It’s what I do., It’s who I am.  It’s what I teach.  It is at the core of everything I do and it was an affirmation to the dedication I have devoted these many years to words.  But, and again I am still under her spell, what I experienced required me stop and meditate on my process and my core mission both in my personal and my professional life.

How can that be, you ask?  Well I’m not sure I can explain it clearly so for now I won’t try.  But, I will say that like any encounter you have with someone who is naturally a master at what they do and who they are and when that is so seamless in the way they do it and you honestly and intuitively know they genuinely walk the walk and talk the talk it is a beauty that transcends description, and I had that experience this past weekend.

Now I have to fully process that experience and discover what I can do with it. I need to explore the many lessons that surely will come from this encounter and if I am extremely lucky and given an opportunity, I may be able to connect to this person a lot.  That idea excites me in transformative ways indeed.

No matter who you are or what you do when you encounter someone who is so naturally gifted at their craft it memorizes you then you know there is opportunity in that meeting.  I don’t care if it is something as important as collecting garbage, performing surgery, or communicating, when someone is profoundly gifted you must stop and thank God you were fortunate to be present at the experience.  I hope many of you have had that experience because it will move you and motivate you in ways that are impossible to measure.

Words, simple, common words.  Words, the tools of the communicator.  Words, the healing and hurt they provide and the challenge and responsibility they provide are awesome and mind blowing and Saturday at about 10:30 a.m. ET I was reminded that words are critical and essential elements of what it will take to continue to influence and educate. Words are the answer and cause of every problem, and words, ladies and gentleman, are our chance and our choice for everything we have ever wanted and will lead us to places that only we can limit.  How amazing is that.

I realized on Saturday that I have only just begun my journey to using words and because of a simple introduction I am wonderfully, beautifully, excitedly ready for my next level relationship with words and for someone who has dedicated almost three decades of his life to words to make that discovery is transcendent in ways I am still contemplating and what a wonderful diversion that is for me.

And no worries, no matter how you feel about my ramblings, because of Saturday and that introduction I am planning a public renewal of my vows to my life’s work.  You are all invited to that ceremony and no gifts please; I got all I needed in that introduction on Saturday and it embodies the warm cliché that this is the gift that will keep on giving.
