Feb. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Snowshoes are a great activity in Lapland and give you a real chance to get out in Lapland and really experience the beauty and vast expanses Lapland has to offer. Although snowshoes are not ideal for very small children, they are ideal for young adults and adults and although can be quite hard work, are a great way to travel across untouched snow where no one has ever set foot before.
The snow shoes allow you to travel without sinking and you will be amazed at how different the snow is in different areas. In some areas the snow is very deep whilst in others, the snow is more flat and shallow.
Using snowshoes is relatively easy and after they have been fitted, you can have a trial run before setting off into the wilderness. All that is needed is enthusiasm and warm clothing and you really will have the time of your life. There are various snowshoe organised activities where you can go out with a guide and a group of people, you will usually follow old snowshoe tracks before returning to your starting point. Other options are to arm yourself with a map and set off on your own but it is always best to take a map because you don’t realise how far you travel and before you know it, it can be difficult to work out where you are.
Snowshoes or a type of snowshoe has been used for centuries in Lapland and surrounding areas to assist the locals in travelling. They were also used to hunt and follow Reindeer quicker and at more ease. Whilst on holiday in Lapland you will see many holidaymakers using the snowshoes, you will also see the locals using snowshoes too and it is also an extremely good form of fitness, much like cross country skiing.
There are so many places to visit with snowshoes and the beauty of them is that you can reach places you wouldn’t normally be able to reach with ease. Climbing up high and watching the sun rise over the horizon in late January and February is simply breathtaking. Chasing the Northern lights is also something you can do with snowshoes and after a long trek, you can sit back and watch the amazing colour spectrum.
Many of the activity centres will hire out the snowshoes for a small fee and you can take part in addition to other activities or you can go on an organised snowshoe trip with a group of people and a guide.
