Feb. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- ROSEBURG, Ore. — The salmon run is taking place right now, but if you’re planning on casting your line, you may want to think twice about bringing your favorite four-legged friend with you.

Dogs all across the county have been falling ill from eating fish.

Raw salmon and other ocean going fish can carry a parasite called Rickettsia, more commonly known as ‘Salmon Poisoning.’

The parasite can seriously harm, or even kill dogs.

A few days after dogs eat raw salmon, they can start to act lethargic. They will probably continue to drink fluids, but they won’t eat.

They will also likely vomit, have diarrhea and run a high fever.

If your dog is showing similar symptoms, officials urge you to bring them to a veterinary clinic.

Blair Bailey, DVM, a partner at the Bailey Veterinary Clinic told KPIC News, “It’s a very serious disease, and we just want people to be aware that any dogs walking in the parks now, on Stewart Park, any of the rivers, if they come across any dead fish or any parts of a fish, no matter how old it is or how rotten it is, they potentially can get very very sick with it.”

Dr. Bailey says that dogs generally respond really well to treatment, but it’s not something that will go away on its own. If left untreated, Rickettsia can kill dogs.

Generally, Dr. Bailey says that a few dogs who are sick from eating salmon will come to the clinic every week. This week, on Tuesday alone, 13 dogs were taken to the Bailey Clinic with symptoms.

Originally, experts believed that Rickettsia was like chicken pox, and that dogs could only get it once. It’s since been proven that they can get it multiple times, so just because your pooch has had it before doesn’t mean they can’t get it again.

Dr. Bailey says that they best way to prevent your dog from getting Rickettsia is to keep them away from fish. “Probably at this point right now, I’d be extremely leery of taking dogs near riverbanks where there might be dead fish washed up on the river banks or anything like that,” he said.

If your dog is showing any signs of Rickettsia, Bailey recommends taking them to a veterinarian immediately.
