Is “attitude everything?”  According to Jackie Monroe, it is!  Jackie is demonstrating how the attitude thing works in her own real life project.  She has made herself the guinea pig for what I call a “behavioral experiment” in which she tests the value of optimistic thinking to help her take on the challenge of getting into the best shape of her life, in 12 short weeks.

Jackie is training to enter a unique triathlon race in mid June; one that involves biking really hilly terrain, crossing a lake in a kayak, and running up and down sand dunes for more than a few miles.

She and Trainer Jenn are the stars of a 12 part  Webisode TV series entitled “Attitude is Everything,” broadcast on OptimsimToday.TV.  In Episode One, from last week, she got some less than flattering baseline stats.  But, the baseline stats give her and us the starting point, the current status “worst case scenario” from which she must build.

Without Endurance it is Easy to Drop Out

In Episode Two Jackie gets into the thick of the “hard stuff” – those beginning steps of moving from being “out-of-shape” to “in-shape.” The steps where working hard really feels hard and the time in which we so often give up on a new endeavor. It's when we start to wonder if it's more than we “bargained for” or more than we can handle.

I am reminded of the days of my late adolescence when I played varsity soccer in high school and college.   We began with 2-a-day practices in the hot summer.  For the next week we could barley walk, our leg muscles so sore, we hobbled around school all day.  Of course, I found out that if I stuck with it, the initial sharp muscle aches and pains faded into a new level of tone and strength.  Then, even though, I had to keep on “working harder to work harder,” it never felt as hard as it was at the beginning.

Key Optimism Word for Today: ENDURANCE

Some sports and events require more endurance than others.  Running and completing a 26 mile marathon requires a great deal more endurance than running the 100 yard dash.  However, to get in the kind of shape one needs to be in to be competitive at an elite level for either type of race, it requires about the same level of endurance.  Getting in shape for any elite level of athletic performance entails long and arduous hours of training.  I use elite level of performance to mean here – being in a state-of-fitness that allows you to perform at the peak of your “God given abilities.”  That definition allows us to talk about “peak” fitness for any level of talent or competition.

As you will see in Episode Two, Jackie endured the hardship of really sore muscles after week one.   So, she endured the first challenge of just staying with the program beyond the beginning phase, a time when we see so many early drop outs in a new fitness regimen.  That STAMINA was a result of “PURE MENTAL ENDURANCE.”

How Much Can Jackie Endure?

In Episode Two, Trainer Jenn focuses Jackie and us on a different kind of ENDURANCE – cardiovascular endurance – a “PURE  PHYSICAL ENDURANCE.”  Jackie is also enduring the public revelation of some of her current weaknesses in core abdomen and glute muscle strength.

Jenn points out that a major goal over the next 10 weeks (two have gone by really quickly) will be to build her physical endurance.  In Episode Two we watch Jackie draw on her reserve of optimistic stamina to endure a hard workout that brings on lightheadedness and nausea. Right now she can endure about 20 minutes at an intense level of working-out.  Will she be able to get to 40, 60 and even 180 minutes of endurance by June?  Trainer Jenn keeps Jackie focused on next steps with a few nutrition tips:

   * Eat more before a workout,
   * Avoid foods with a high glycemic index.

Stay tuned week to week to find out how Jackie is “enduring” her journey.

When was the last time you were in the best shape of your life?  Was it the best shape you could be in?
