Neighborhood outage. Check to see if your neighbors have also lost electricity. This will tell you if it is a systemic problem or if it is only your house. If more than one house has lost power, call your electric company to alert them. They usually have toll-free numbers for just this purpose. If it’s not a weather-related problem, the problem is often a malfunctioning transformer and they will send an electrician to fix it right away.

Tripped circuit or blown fuse. Check to see if the whole house, or only part of the house, has lost power. If only part of your house is in darkness, see if it is a tripped breaker or a blown fuse. Find the electrical panel and flip the proper breaker switch to regain electricity. If this is a recurring problem, you either have a defective appliance or an overloaded electrical circuit. You will need to call a professional electrician. If part of your house is completely dead and it is not a circuit problem, you probably have a poor connection somewhere along the line. In that case you will also need to call an electrician. Our master electrician at AbleAir-1 can rewire your home with minimal disruption.

Main Breaker. If your entire house is out of power and it’s not a neighborhood outage and the problem is not in your electrical panel or fuse box, check the main breaker. The breaker is usually located beside or below the meter in the meter base. If this main breaker is tripped, you can reset it. It also signals that something is wrong with your entire electrical system. Call our master electrician at AbleAir-1 for immediate help.

Protect your electronics. Whenever your power is out, unplug any items that could be damaged when power is restored and there is a sudden surge of electricity. Your television, stereo, computer and microwave are just a few of the items you should make sure are unplugged. It is helpful to leave one light or radio on so you know when the power has been restored.

Protect your food. Try not to open the freezer and refrigerator unless absolutely necessary. Keeping the doors closed will keep the cold air in and preserve your food longer. Food can normally stay in a refrigerator for up to 24 hours and in a freezer for up to 48 hours. It is not advised to try to cook on a camp stove or other temporary cooking device. These stoves are meant to be used outdoors and can cause fires or injury through smoke inhalation in improperly ventilated areas.
