When asked for an opinion about the product, Antony answered, “The product is called a harmonic capacitor, which some companies claim can decrease or eliminate your electric bill.  This sounds too good to be true, because it is.”

The harmonic capacitor is said to reduce the amount of power consumed by storing electricity otherwise lost from the motors in home appliances and air conditioners.  The cost of the unit is approximately $300 plus labor for installation.

Antony went on to explain, “Power factor is the term used to describe the efficiency of electricity from the utility company.  The higher the power factor, the more efficient your home is.  Recent research indicates the power factor is typically 95 percent in most homes; not the 77 percent claimed by some marketers of the product.”

“In my opinion, the savings is minute compared to the cost of the product,” said Bradley.  “There are many other things you can do to save electricity, including turning off lights and TVs when not in use, and weatherizing your home.”

Antony also suggests installing a programmable thermostat, using energy efficient light bulbs, purchasing energy star appliances and making sure there is adequate insulation in the attic.
