Feb. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Briefly, Why Window Tint Works:  Modern window films are light-years ahead of the mirror-like, purple, or bubbled window coatings from decades past.  These micro-thin, clear glass tinting films are products of the space age.  Ceramic nanotechnology, polyester, and precious metal alloys are components of today’s high films that supercharge the performance of any window.  These transparent and often invisible window films greatly reduce heat gain and heat loss through window glass.  Home window tinting can easily increase the efficiency of the glass by 60%.  Since most heat gain and heat loss in a home occurs through its windows (up to 50%), it is easy to understand how window insulating films can slash your electric bills by up to 30% - year round.
There are two paths home owners can take to install window insulating film:  Hiring a professional company, and Do It Yourself (DIY).
The first path is to hire an architectural window film installation company.  This may be the easiest way, but usually requires a larger investment to complete the project.  It is suggested to hire a professional if help is needed with product selection, the installation is difficult, or the homeowner doesn’t have the time or skills to get the job done.
Here are 4 tips for contracting a home window tinting project:
1.   Interview 3 experienced and reputable professional Window Film Dealers
2.   Check references and hire the Best one
3.   Choose a tinting product that best fits decor/style and performance expectations
4.   Move any valuable keepsakes and furnishings away from the windows during installation.
The second path is to Do It Yourself.  In a typical home with normal windows, and a reasonable amount of patience and skill, homeowners can successfully tint their own home windows.  These home owners can expect years of savings with lower utility bills caused by the tinting.  They will also save substantially on the initial investment by installing the window film themselves.
Do It Yourself -- Here are 8 steps in How to Tint a Window:
1.    Select and buy the proper window film – choose the tinting that will solve the issue
2.   Clean the window – use mild soapy water with scrub pad, razor blade, squeegee
3.   Cut the window film – with a razor and straight edge, slightly larger than the glass
4.   Remove the film’s liner – peel off a thin clear liner that protects the built-in adhesive
5.   Apply the tint - position the film on the glass using the same mild soapy water for slip
6.   Set the film - squeegee on top of flat whetted tint to stick and hold it to the glass
7.   Trim the tint – use a razor knife and a thin plastic guide to trim film at glass edge
8.   Push the water out from behind the window film – use squeegee or smooth plastic card, and paper towel to remove all visible water from behind the window film to the edge.
In summary, window tinting works and can save home owners up to 30% on electric bills.  There are two paths for owners to get their home windows tinted:  Hire a professional, and Do It Yourself.  Home owners need to go down the right path to obtain an effective window film installation.  The 4 tips will insure success with contracting the tinting job using a pro.  How to tint a window using the 8 steps will help give professional results for the Do It Yourself-er.
