Feb. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- A new British company is taking the fashion world by storm with its unique range of handmade bags that combine super-ethical credentials with cutting-edge design.

Onfriday, based in York, sells bags of all kinds that appeal to both men and women via its website at www.onfriday.co.uk. The high-quality, on-trend designs, which have been sourced from all over the world, often feature unusual upcycled materials such as tyre inner tubes!

Onfriday’s director, Ali Gane, says “Ethical fashion is often perceived as being low-quality or ‘hippy’, so we were keen to avoid this kind of image when selecting our ranges for onfriday. When we carried out some market research many people told us that they would love to buy ethical bags, but simply couldn’t find anything that was fashionable or attractive enough for their taste; so we set out to fill that gap in the market. Now our customers are able to buy ethical bags they are proud to show off!”

As well as selling bags that are produced in a sustainable manner, the issue of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill is of prime importance to the company. One of the latest additions to its stock is a range of bags and mobile phone cases produced by UK company Elvis & Kresse that is made from 25 year-old upcycled fire hose. Once the grease and soot of active service is scrubbed away, the result is a truly ‘green’ material with the appearance and feel of finest leather. Their products have been featured in American Vogue and are a firm favourite of movie star Cameron Diaz.

Onfriday’s bags come from countries as far afield as Argentina, India, Nepal and the USA, but the company has plans to offset its transport carbon footprint and, as members of the 1% For The Planet initiative, will be channelling 1% of its turnover into grassroots environmental projects around the world. With an eye to reducing its environmental impact even further in the future, onfriday is particularly keen to showcase products made in the UK and eventually hopes to produce an own-label range of bags working with UK-based designers and manufacturers.

Ali Gane says “Although we really care about the provenance of the bags we sell, we are not ‘soap box’ people and the last thing we want to do is preach about the ethics of fashion; but we are passionate about being part of a more just and fair world and we care about the future of our planet. We also happen to love great cutting-edge design and really want to help young designers develop and grow. Onfriday gives us the perfect opportunity to showcase and support some of the most talented and exciting designers involved in ethical fashion today whilst helping to promote a fairer, greener world.”
