A new Irish-American book reveals 80 years of America via poetry, images and essays: On History’s Front Steps: One Irish Clan’s Exploits in Northampton, Massachusetts “The Paradise of America.” ($18. 127 pp. Florence Poets Society 2010).
Writer and poet James Francis Cahillane, announces publication of On History’s Front Steps. A book inspired by Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Trethewey’s example of photos and facts to create poetry. Blessed by a grant from the Northampton Arts Council, Cahillane examines his family’s Irish American journey utilizing Irish-American cultural lenses: sports, immigration, family business, civic honors, military service, pride, fleeting fame, JFK-era politics, faith and historic civic celebrations.
In a cover comment Professor A. D. Cousins says: “In this book Jim Cahillane captures America through snapshots from one family’s history. He tells affectionately, wryly, perceptively, and movingly about dreams and the hard work (sometimes luck) that made them come true.”
Jim’s dad was one of two Irish born mayors in the United States. His book’s fifty-six poems and five essays were derived from over sixty family and historical photographs dating from 1930 to 2010.
Cahillane is a longtime Daily Hampshire Gazette columnist. Northampton’s 350th Anniversary Committee published his Irish-American memoir, “The Best Place of All”. His award-winning Writer’s Digest International poetry book,“ A Winter Offering” was expanded to:” A Winter Offering & A Second Collection” (Florence Poets Society 2007). Each volume adds important chapters to the Irish American storybook.
Jim’s essays sum up many lives with emphasis on family continuity during the greater part of a century spent in pursuit of the American Dream. It reveals through one writer’s eyes who we were, who we are and, maybe, who we will be.
Jim Cahillane’s books are on sale at local bookstores and at Amazon.com.
