VOCs causing IAQ Problems across the Mid-Atlantic

Feb. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- VOCs include an assortment of chemicals used in our modern lives.  VOCs are emitted as gases from many common solids or liquids used by industry to make the products all around us. Exposure to some of these VOCs may cause short or long term adverse health effects.

Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors.  These VOCs are emitted by a wide collection of products, furnishings and building materials found in industrial, institutional, commercial and residential environments.

Organic chemicals’ health effects vary greatly from those that are highly toxic, to those with no known health effect. Some of these chemicals can be toxic, allergenic and carcinogenic.  The extent and nature of any health effects from exposure often depends on factors that include the level of exposure and length of time exposed.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), studies have found that levels of several organic chemicals average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors.  Sussex Environmental Health Consultants, LLC (SEHC) has decades of experience helping to identify and resolve issues with volatile organic compounds and other IAQ contaminants across the Mid-Atlantic region.
