Is saturated fat really that bad for our health?

Feb. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Our lack of knowledge about saturated oils brought about a drastic drop in the use of oils containing saturated fats and oils, and had to pay the price by a drastic rise in the number of rare and incurable degenerative diseases. Hence saturated fat is a perfectly natural part of the human diet and has been for eternity…. it is NOT the evil demon it has been made out to be!

We require saturated fat for good digestive function, growth, along with a multitude of other processes. You would be surprised to know that just about every food we have has saturated fatty acids present within them. Be it meat or vegetarian. All has saturated oil or fat in them. Even the so-called polyunsaturated oils similar to safflower oil, corn oil, and even flaxseed oil have saturated fat.

Our body prefers a larger proportion of saturated fatty acids than unsaturated fatty acids for some crucial cell building processes. Cholesterol and Saturated Fats have been always considered as culprits because saturated fats transforms into cholesterol and were considered to cause all sorts of heart diseases. Cholesterol performs many important body functions like cell building, production of hormones and is vital component for brain and nerve tissue development. In a nutshell it's hard to live without cholesterol.

Till now none of the research or studies could prove that saturated fat is indeed harmful for our health. All the research and studies conducted till this date failed to prove that saturated is indeed bad. And none of these researchers could actually find any link between the intakes of saturated fatty acids to heart diseases. These studies failed to understand the difference between the processed and dangerous Trans fat or artificially hydrogenated oils from the healthy saturated fats, which was the major flaw in such studies.

Several studies have shown that many tribes from Africa and certain pacific island nations had VERY high intakes of total fat as well as saturated fat since generations from tropical fats such as palm, coconut, cocoa and red meat but still they were lean and absolutely healthy. But these same tribes, when moved away from their natural habitat due to social and economic factors, and adopted lethargic lifestyle and ate junk food rich in unhealthy Trans fats, heart diseases started becoming common in them. So now scientists have discovered that saturated fat is not responsible for heart diseases at all, but it is the modern day life style along with high intake of Trans fats which are.
