On Nathan Hilton's website ( http://customgaugepod.com ) the exact method he uses to make these gauge pods is revealed in full detail. Everything from the materials he prefers to the method of applying the final coat of paint is layed out, there are even pictures to help guide the process.
Getting back to the Camaro gauge pod, in a video shared on YouTube Nathan discusses the texture coating and why he recommends to texture and paint the passenger side pillar trim along with the gauge pillar.
Here is that video, http://www.youtube.com/
Its not revealed in the video exactly what Nathan uses to create that textured look, but it is shared on his website at CustomGaugePod dotcom. Turns out, that factory resemblence comes from a 3M product called Rubberized Undercoating. Its pretty surprising that a rust protection spray could be used to generate a look that closely matches an interior appearance, but Nathan has done his share of testing and that proved to provide the best results.
