Feb. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- With 40 years of Music Therapy experience under her belt, Mary Scovel, a licensed music therapist, knows what is necessary to make progress in the industry. An industry that has made many advancements through the years, as well as inroads to the reputable medical science world. When I met Mary, she cast a radiance and contentment. She has an unconditional passion for music therapy and will go to great lengths to get through to her patients, “The feeling it gives me when I know I'm making a difference is indescribable. Music emancipates the spirit.” she professes. And it shows.

Through her therapy sessions Mary has seen first-hand what a fun and rewarding team experience playing handchimes can be, and has spent countless hours hand-crafting charts for use with handchimes to include the melodies and harmonies of songs. And when times were rough, she did what she could, “even if I had to piece them together with whatever materials were available.” she says. Many music therapists can relate to this process, and with budget restraints being a major factor, they see the importance of a low-cost, time saving solution to chart creation that will allow them to focus on the things that matter, their patients. This led Mary to develop Chimers Charts™, a musical system that allows participants of all ages and abilities to ring handchimes without the need to read music. Similar to the charts many music therapists have been creating for years, these charts are more durable and more equipped for effective developmental program sessions. These innovative charts take the frustration out of learning and teaching music by allowing almost anyone to make music without the need to read music.

How does It Work?

Chimers Charts are the first commercial music instructional aide using colors and letters to designate what and when notes should be played for a particular song. Although initially designed for Music Therapy sessions, many other groups can take advantage of this great tool including: congregations, retirement/senior groups, youth groups, educational facilities, and community organizations. Chimers Charts consist of a set of five laminated, double-sided music charts and provide ten familiar songs that require a group between 8-12 members* depending on the song. All members of the group refer to the Chimers Chart placed in front of them. As the group leader points to the Chart, which prompts the group members to play their corresponding instruments, the group members then relate the notes and chords of a song (shown through the use of letters and colors on Chimers Charts) to the letter and color stickers placed on the instruments. Following the group leader's prompt, group sessions can begin with the melody line then progress to include the harmonies.

Chimers Charts are a music making accomplishment for anyone, especially for groups that include exceptional members who may be challenged in a physical or mental capacity. They can improve many facets of one's life including memory skills, reaction time, confidence, concentration, character, and motor-skills.  Chimers Charts can also be used in conjunction with other instruments.
