Metro Glass Omaha - Is your windshield installed properly? Rust - what you need to know!

Inexpensive and inexperienced windshield replacement can cause expensive and unsafe conditions for your vehicle. Having the work completed correctly the first time is preferable. The old adage, "you get what you pay for" definitely applies here.

Feb. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- When a technician removes your windshield he uses metal tools that “cut” between your existing windshield and the metal surface that it rests on (the pinch weld).  Factory adhesive, called urethane bonds the glass to the frame of your vehicle and ads tremendous support to the structural integrity of your vehicle.  Vehicles are not manufactured the way that they used to be.  Vehicles are lighter to gain better gas mileage and the metal structural support is just not present like it was 20 years ago.  Your windshield supplies up to 70% of the support of your roof in the occurrence of a rollover accident.  The glass keeps the roof from crushing in on you.

As the technician cuts through the old urethane, he scratches the pinch weld.  If the technician does not clean and put primer on the pinch weld, the metal will begin the rust process as soon as the new urethane is applied.  You can not install a safe windshield when rust is present.  The urethane will not bond to the vehicle body and the windshield will release with the rust.

“There are varying degrees of rust.  At Metro Glass, unfortunately we have to perform rust treatments several times a week due to the careless or unknowledgeable practices in the market.  If the rust has not reached the stage where there are actual holes in the metal, we can grind the rust out and apply a corrosive retardant and install a safe windshield in our shop.  In about 10% of the rust cases, the vehicle has to go to a body shop for major rust removal and welding of a new metal strip.  Basic rust removal can range from $70-$170.  A more serious job at a body shop can cost between $250 and $650,” states Rich Lutton, owner of Metro Glass.

Avoiding cheap, quick, unsafe windshield replacement can save you a great deal of money in the future and more importantly, keep you safe.  Even though your windshield is a Federally Mandated piece of Safety Equipment, anyone can install a windshield without training or certifications.  This is a disturbing fact. A sub-quality windshield installation can cost you more money down the road!

Choosing a shop that is AGRSS Registered (Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard- www.safewindshields.com ) can ensure that your windshield is being installed using these crucial steps and  your vehicle will maintain its factory condition and be safe on the road ahead.
