Doctor's Question New Study Shows Diet Soda and Increased Risk of Stroke and Heart Disease

New research shows a connection between those who drink diet soda with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Preliminary results have doctor's questioning these controversial results.

Feb. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- According to a new study presented at the American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles, 61 percent of more than 2,500 participants who drank diet soda daily showed an increased risk of cardiovascular problems compared to those who did not drink any soda. The study also accounted for smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and calories consumed per day.

The results from this study have generated a lot of press and left doctors with more questions than answers. The reasons that diet soda's have this effect are unknown. There are a couple of working hypotheses for this; one is that those who drank diet soda were missing out on other healthier drinks like water. Another answer may be that diet soda saves on calories, but they are so sweet that triggers your brain to crave more sweets, causing more unhealthy eating habits.

"This study suggests that diet soda is not an optimal substitute for sugar-sweetened beverages, and may be associated with a greater risk of stroke," Hannah Gardener of the University of Miami and her colleagues reported at the conference.
But the questionnaire-based study garnered controversy by experts in diet, nutrition and vascular disease.
"This study has major flaws and should not change anyone's diet soda consumption," said ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser.

Contrary to popular belief, drinking a diet soda may not actually save from becoming overweight. A recent long-term study showed 65% of subjects who consumed diet sodas were at a greater risk of becoming overweight or obese.

Experts say the thing that general public should take away from this, is drinking anything in excess, sodas, juices, caffeinated beverages and alcohol can be detrimental to your health. Substituting water or other non-sweetened drinks will help increase your overall health. As always, a well-balanced diet along with regular exercise is the best bet for you keeping you healthy.
